Over the past 6 months, our small indie team at Mythical City Games has been working to create a game that is desperately missing from the VR ecosystem. A persistent open world experience, where your actions matter. Every wall you build, every item you drop, every enemy you take out, affects a live simulation that goes on whether you're playing or not. Enter the world of Neon Exile, a sci-fi MMO built on top of a distributed server system that allows for this type of depth in a virtual world.
Neon Exile is undoubtedly a massive undertaking and it will take time and a healthy budget to get to our ultimate vision for the game. However the first step on that journey is coming this summer as we release the Fringe Sector prototype for Early Access to get community involvement as soon as possible in creating this amazing world.
The Fringe Sector will contain many of the core mechanics of Neon Exile but will take place along the outskirts of the last mega city on Earth, where a mysterious threat "the VERMin" must be stopped before it reaches the City. Players will be able to build, gather resources, climb any structure (including anything they build), explore the wasteland and of course defend against the ever expanding VERMin presence. All of this in a persistent single instance world. So what is a persistent world? Well, if you think of a typical MMO, when you go on a raid or into a dungeon, you effectively enter into a new server "room", that doesn't affect any other players and is deleted as soon as you leave (kind of like a single match of an online FPS). Say you drop a weapon in that dungeon, it gets deleted when the room closes. But in a persistent world, if you wreck the dungeon, drop a weapon or even if you build an entirely new dungeon, it will stay that way until another player comes along and changes it. However there are limitations to this type of system and that is part of what we want to explore with our player community. How far can we take this system, and what else can we do with the game that we haven't even thought of yet? We're not going to just stop at the outskirts of a massive mega city of the future, by the end of 2019 we plan to bring the adventure of Neon Exile into the city itself, where new dangers and Blade Runner/Akira inspired dystopian stories take place. We hope you join us on this incredible journey to make something special and long lasting that levels up VR.
